May is Better Hearing & Speech Month!

Raise Awareness!

May is Better Hearing & Speech Month!  You might be thinking, what exactly does that mean?! It means it is our job, as professionals, to raise awareness about communication disorders.  I am including a link to ASHA's website for some FREE printable resources from the Identify the Signs Campaign of 2014. {Click here to be taken to the site.} Keep reading for more information...

Many of my fellow SLPs, myself included, are continuously raising awareness about communication disorders and the importance of early intervention and treatment.  Raising awareness has been ingrained in our brains since the early days of graduate school; it's just part of who we are. Here is a list of possible ways you can raise awareness this month:

1.  Speak to family and friends about your profession!
     ~What exactly do you do?
     ~Why do you do it?
     ~How do you see the family members and clients react when communication improves?

2.  Give a presentation to your school staff.
     ~Share what your role is within the public school community {special education and general education!}
     ~Educate the staff about what you do and why you do it!
     ~Educate the staff about the importance of early identification and early intervention!
     ~Educate the staff on all the different aspects of Speech-Language Pathology {e.g. receptive and expressive language, fluency, voice, articulation, pragmatics, AAC, TBI, functional communication skills, the list is endless!!!} and skills a SLP has!

3.  Create educational posters with your students and hang them up around the school.
     ~This activity is a great way to further educate your students and get them involved in a great cause!
     ~Write facts about communication disorders on posters and decorate with your students. Next, hang them up around the school.
